When we first came across Cindy's story, we weren't looking for our next project. We were simply watching videos like millions of other people around the world.
Like everyone else, we found ourselves smiling.
Then we wanted to know more.
Who was this baboon?
Why did so many people care about her?
The more we learned, the more we realized Cindy wasn't just another animal on the internet. She had become part of a family, part of a community, and for millions of people, part of their daily lives.
That's why we knew her story deserved to be shared in a new way.
It All Began With One Small Baboon
Around November 1994, a farmer in Namibia found a tiny chacma baboon all alone.
There was no sign of her mother.
At the time, there were no wildlife sanctuaries nearby that could care for orphaned baboons, so the farmer asked a young couple if they would take her in.
They said yes.
That single decision changed everything.
The tiny baboon was named Cindy, and what was meant to be a rescue became a 31-year journey filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
More Than a Pet
As Ruben Namibia grew up, Cindy grew up with him.
She wasn't treated like an attraction.
She wasn't raised for social media.
She was simply family.
Like any older sister, she had a personality all her own.
She could be mischievous, stealing lipstick or sneaking away with a bottle of wine. She loved grooming the people she cared about and had a special affection for baby meerkats and warthogs that were rescued on the farm.
Every day brought another story.
Another laugh.
Another memory.
The Baboon Who Changed People's Minds
For many people, baboons had always been misunderstood.
Then they met Cindy.
Through Ruben's videos, people saw something they had never noticed before.
They saw intelligence.
They saw kindness.
They saw humor.
Most of all, they saw personality.
As more videos were shared, Cindy's audience grew from a handful of followers into millions of people around the world. Her daily adventures made people smile, laugh, and sometimes even cry.
Many viewers later shared that Cindy had helped them through illness, grief, depression, and loneliness.
It's hard to imagine a greater legacy than that.
Even Blindness Couldn't Stop Her Spirit
In 2023, Cindy lost her eyesight.
Life became more difficult, but it didn't change who she was.
She still loved her family.
She still enjoyed being around the other rescue animals.
She still had the quiet strength that had made so many people fall in love with her.
Watching her adapt reminded people that resilience isn't always loud.
Sometimes it's simply choosing to keep going.
A Goodbye Felt Around the World
When Cindy passed away, something remarkable happened.
Messages arrived from every corner of the globe.
People shared stories about how she had brightened difficult days.
Some said she had helped them through depression.
Others said she became part of their daily routine.
Many had never met Cindy in person, yet they felt as though they had lost an old friend.
That kind of connection is incredibly rare.
It says everything about the life she lived.
